Cross-functional leadership requires leveraging both project management (PM) and alliance management (AM) skills, employing sound business acumen, and fostering strong cross-functional teamwork. PMs and AMs wear multiple hats. Both roles require adeptly responding to internal organizational drivers and the rapidly evolving external environment to ensure project, program, and portfolio success. Project and Alliance Management competencies can be leveraged interchangeably to support the product lifecycle, identify required team resources, align key stakeholders, and improve organizational decision-making. In the current biotech environment, companies aim to gain an advantage by being at the cutting edge of technology. Often a necessary business requirement is partnering with companies that are aligned with the long-term product development, regulatory and commercial strategy. Skillful management of global cross-functional teams, risk and time management, critical thinking, and financial management are examples of key project management skills while partnering, trust building, negotiating, and resolving conflicts are examples of key alliance management skills. Both sets of skills are necessary when actively managing internal stakeholders as well as external alliance partners. Throughout this session, the audience will be asked to participate in case studies and respond to polling to determine the best approach for handling a series of real-life scenarios that highlight the principles of both project management and alliance management key competencies. Working through these scenarios will help the attendees broaden their knowledge base and expand their tool kit for approaching similar everyday challenges.

Learning Objectives

Develop cross-functional leadership skills for delivering business objectives by honing project management (PM) and alliance management (AM) skills; Apply best practice PM and AM competencies to improve cross-functional teamwork, enhance strategic thinking, and optimize negotiations.
